Listen to Alt-J on iHeartRadio

Alt-J is without a bassist.  The English indie rockers announced over the weekend that Gwil Sainsbury has made the "purely personal decision" to leave the band.

The group's tweet about Sainsbury's exit didn't offer many other details, although the remaining members said that, as their best friend, they support him completely.

Sainsbury was a founding member of Alt-J when the group came together in 2007.  They released their debut album An Awesome Wave in 2012, and picked up that year's Mercury Prize.

A replacement bass player has yet to be announced.
